The Science Behind Our Midsole

Most runners never think about what’s between their foot and the road until something goes wrong — a knee that aches by mile 8, a foot that feels flat and tired before the run even ends. At Stride, we spent three years obsessing over that gap. The result is CloudTech, our proprietary midsole platform, and it’s the reason our shoes feel less like something you wear and more like something that works with you.

It Starts With the Foam

CloudTech is built on a dual-density nitrogen-infused compound we call AeroCell. Unlike traditional EVA foams, which compress and go flat under repeated impact, AeroCell’s cell structure is engineered to resist collapse. Millions of microscopic nitrogen bubbles are locked into the foam during molding, creating a matrix that compresses on impact and springs back with almost the same energy it absorbed. In lab testing, AeroCell returns roughly 20% more energy per stride than standard midsole foams — energy that would otherwise be lost as heat and vibration.

A Geometry That Reads the Road

Foam is only half the equation. CloudTech’s shape does the rest. The midsole uses a variable-thickness geometry: thicker under the heel to absorb the shock of heel strike, tapering through the midfoot for stability, and curving upward at the forefoot into what we call the Propulsion Arc. That upward curve works like a rocker, helping guide your foot through toe-off instead of forcing your calf and Achilles to do all the work.

Two Densities, One Ride

Look closely at a CloudTech midsole and you’ll notice two distinct foam layers. The bottom layer is firmer and more responsive, built to protect against overcompression during faster efforts and sharper impacts. The top layer, closer to your foot, is softer and plush, cushioning each landing before your weight transfers forward. It’s a structure borrowed from suspension design — a firm base for control, a soft top layer for comfort — so the ride feels plush without feeling unstable.

Built to Last, Not Just to Launch Fast

A lot of performance foams feel incredible out of the box and lifeless by month two. We tested CloudTech through the equivalent of 400 miles of accelerated wear testing, and it retained over 90% of its original energy return. That durability comes down to the nitrogen-cell structure itself — because the cells resist permanent compression, the foam doesn’t pack down and go dead the way conventional foams do.

Why It Matters on the Run

None of this is engineering for its own sake. A more efficient midsole means less energy lost to the ground and more left over for the miles that matter — mile 10 of a long run, the final stretch of a race, the sprint at the end of a track workout. CloudTech isn’t about making you feel a gimmick underfoot. It’s about making the thousands of strides in a run feel just a little more effortless than the one before it.
